Onychomycosis is a nail fungal infection, this condition may affect toenails or fingernails. It’s particulary common in toe nails and occurs in about 10% of the adult population.
Dermatophytes are the fungi most commonly responsible for onychomycosis. Usually it's transmitted by direct contact when we share shoes or when we use public showers.
The most common symptom of this situation is that the nail becomes thickened and discolored; white, black, yellow or green. As the infection progresses the nail can become brittle, with pieces breaking off or coming away from the toe or finger completely.
